Hussein Sheleh, MD

Hussein Sheleh, MD

Hussein hails from the Levant and has pursued an internationally grounded medical education and training pathway. He began his medical studies at the University of Aleppo in Syria and later continued his education at Near East University in Cyprus, where he completed his medical degree. Following graduation, he undertook a comprehensive year-long medical internship in Dubai, gaining broad clinical exposure across multiple specialties. He subsequently pursued further focused training in emergency medicine in Abu Dhabi, where he developed a strong foundation in acute care and high-pressure clinical decision-making.

Driven by a deep curiosity about the complexity of human biology and the scientific mechanisms that govern health and disease, Hussein’s interest in medicine has been shaped by both intellectual fascination and hands-on clinical experience. To further strengthen his research acumen and contribute meaningfully to evidence-based medicine, he earned a Master’s degree in Clinical Research from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City.

Hussein aspires to pursue residency training with the long-term goal of completing a fellowship in critical care medicine. His career interests lie at the intersection of clinical excellence, research, and the care of critically ill patients, where he hopes to contribute to advancing patient outcomes through both clinical practice and scientific inquiry. Outside of medicine, he enjoys cooking—particularly experimenting with duck recipes—and values spending time with friends and fellow residents, often unwinding over activities such as Topgolf.

Meet Our Residents

Hi. My name is Dr. Hussein Sheleh. I graduated from New East University faculty of Medicine in the island of Cyprus in the Mediterranean.

Interviewer: When or how did you decide that you wanted to pursue a career in medicine?

I was motivated by my love for the science behind medicine, biology and anatomy, biochemistry and physiology, all of these basic sciences. I found myself in love and, and I wanted to study medicine because I like I like these basic sciences.

Interviewer: And how does it feel to know that you're a part of this historic charter member first set of residents in San Antonio Regional Hospital's one hundred and eighteen year history?

I'm very happy that, I'm in this residency program. I'm very excited, about the many, learning opportunities that are available, at this hospital.

Interviewer: Share a little bit about what you enjoy about that physician patient interaction.

I like to help my patients. I care about their health and, I try to build, trust and confidence, between me and my patients.

Interviewer: How does it make you feel when you're able to treat your patients and help them overcome an illness or an injury or trauma that they're experiencing?

I feel great satisfaction when I succeed in improving the health of my patients.

Interviewer: Tell us a little bit about your hometown and your experience here in the setting at San Antonio Regional Hospital in the community and maybe some similarities or differences that are positive that you've experienced so far.

I'm originally from Syria. I'm an international medical graduate. Health care in Syria is less advanced than the health care here. And I think I feel comfortable while living here and while training, at this hospital and while interacting with the people here and, learning and inquiring valuable knowledge and experience and to become a successful physician and to help patients and contribute to their health and better outcomes.
